MUSIC WORLD: Jamaican artist and producer RUNKUS, has released the visuals for ‘MAKE IT BREATHE’ ft Tarrus Riley
Jamaican artist and producer Runkus, has released the visuals for ‘Make It Breathe’ ft Tarrus Riley; track 10 from his ‘IN:SIDE’ LP released earlier this year. The video was directed by local cinematographer Mykal ‘Director Kush’ Cushnie and is possible through the partnerships of LA-based Indie Label Delicious Vinyl Island and Clarks Originals.
“In a time where it’s hard to breathe and it’s such a busy time mentally, spiritually, emotionally - what we really need to do is just chill,” Runkus said of the inspiration behind the track. “Especially in a time where this virus makes it hard to breathe we definitely need to protect our breath even more; our actual breath and figuratively, our breath of life. So we need to ensure that we don’t fall short of the blessings that need to be given to us from life itself”
The track alludes to the pandemic but only loosely as it also echoes the struggles people face on an everyday basis. The song was produced by Jevaughn ‘Alpha Unit’ Jones and was at first a funk beat which they, over the course of 4 days, transformed into a Reggae beat; Tarrus added his own flair by suggesting they add a live bassline which was beautifully tied in the track. As for the visuals, they were shot in Runkus’ community in Portmore, St. Catherine and Director Kush said he wanted to capture a pre-emptive scene of an escape. “With COVID and people wearing masks he [Runkus] wanted to kinda capture people coming together and just escaping what is present day,” Director Kush said. “What better way to tell the story than with children? They are the future. So we showed them escaping to go to the playground; it seems simple but children going to the playground right now is almost nonexistent because of what’s going on right now.” The video is a timely reminder of how easily the simple things one may take for granted can be taken away.
The music video for ‘Make It Breathe’ is available NOW and was produced via a collaboration between Delicious Vinyl Island and Clarks Originals; both Runkus and Tarrus Riley are seen sporting special pieces from their line throughout the video. The collaboration between Clarks Originals and Runkus was seamless as they have a longstanding stake in Dancehall and Reggae culture and are continuing on that path with the rising stars from the genres.
