INTRODUCING: TESH BATKINS
Say a big, warm hello to your new favourite indie-pop songstress, Tesh Batkins – the New Zealander-Australian sun-kissed beauty making waves in more ways than one. At only 23 years old and just over a year into her music career, Tesh has already gathered an impressively loyal fan-base with the few honest gems she has released – and it’s no surprise as to why.
With crystalline vocals gliding across ethereal layers of instrumentation, Tesh creates a euphoric (and at times bittersweet) experience for her listeners, perfectly capturing the ebb and flow of love and life through melodies plucked directly from her heart and soul. Infusing each note with vulnerability and authenticity, Tesh manages to cultivate an intimate connection with her listeners, encouraging a safe space to reflect, relate and of course sing along to, as she delicately expresses her innermost thoughts and emotions.
I was fortunate enough to sit down with Tesh to discover more about her journey as an artist in preparation for her new single release next week. With a refreshingly introspective creative process, an enticing energy both restless and content, and of course pure, natural beauty you can’t ignore, meeting Tesh Batkins truly left me in a state of admiration – and I can’t wait for you all to meet her.

Who is Tesh? How did you come to be where you are today?
I grew up mostly in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, but when I was 17 I had this gut feeling that made me move to Australia. My life has always revolved around the ocean, so I moved to the Gold Coast, which is really just a big Mount Maunganui and made the most sense for me. I really had no idea what I was doing at the time, but it’s definitely the best decision I’ve ever made. I never really had a set plan for what I wanted to do in life, I just knew that I had a passion for music and never wanted to stop singing, and although I am just starting out in the music industry, I wouldn’t be pursuing this dream if it weren’t for the decisions I’ve made and the people in my life that chose to believe in me.
When did you first realise you wanted to pursue a music career?
I’ve always loved singing and music, but never really thought anything of it until I met a guy called Jordan Dozzi who made me get in the studio with him 2 years ago. That really sparked something in me and since then my passion for writing and music has grown and I’ve really started to push myself. My hope with my music is to tell a story and for people to resonate with my lyrics. You only get one life so you might as well take every opportunity!
Tell us the inspiration/s behind your new single?
Basically it’s about not putting your all into someone who isn’t sure about you. These days the ‘seeing stage’ is such a chase and a game to some people, nobody really knows the truth behind someone’s intentions. I thought so highly of a guy who unfortunately hurt me in the end, and held onto the ‘what if’ for so long, just to realise too late that I was holding onto a one-sided feeling and it was time to let go.
What genre of music do you usually listen to?
I listen to anything with good, relatable lyrics and a memorable beat these days. I love indie/pop, anything acoustic, singer/songwriter, electronic/pop, rap, alternative/pop and rock, but honestly as long as a song is catchy with meaningful lyrics, I’ll listen!
Who would be your dream artist to work with?
I can not just choose one… I think JP Saxe is amazing – he would definitely be my number one. Julia Michaels and Lany a very close second! Australian artists I would love to work with though are Dean Lewis, Amy Shark and Ziggy Alberts.
What are your goals in relation to your music career?
My short term goal is to start gigging at local places and to start getting my name out there as a singer/songwriter. Definitely release more music (that one is given!). My long term goal is to be surrounded by amazing musicians who want to grow with me, who want to tour and do shows and hopefully one day play at a festival. Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, etc...that would definitely be my goal in Australia! I am all about slow and steady wins the race but it would definitely be a dream come true to play my own music to thousands of people!
Tesh’s new single ‘How You Know’ will be out next week! Make sure to follow her socials so you don’t miss out and get ready to swim in all the feels that this magical artist shares.
