For those who don’t know, when did you first start your music journey? (How did you come to be where you are today?)

I started music from a very early age - I played the piano and was in the choir from around 9 years old. I then entered school talent shows, went to the BRIT school and started my real musical journey after I left there.

How has the last year been for you career wise/creatively? (Any big moments, small successes, low learning points, creative sparks or flows?)

The last year has been the most difficult to navigate but has also been when i’ve made the best music. Exploring different sounds and collaborating with different producers was a great highlight.

You have just released a new video to accompany your single ‘Home’. First, can you tell us about the song — the story behind it and what it means to you?

‘Home’ is extremely personal to me, I wrote this about the end of a relationship whilst literally going through it. The song to me is about realising that throughout life we will find ourselves attaching our happiness to places, moments and people. But it is very important to only attach our happiness to ourselves, therefore making us our home’ so no one is (in) control of our happiness.

How do you feel the music video tells this story? Did you always have a clear vision for the video/visual to this song or did this change over time?

Me and Martina (Director) wanted to make the video feel as raw and emotional as the song itself. We had a basic feel and idea of what we wanted but we ended up free styling the majority of the visual & naturally ran with ideas that came. It was very important to us that you felt how real the song was through the visual and that it ended on a happier note than where it began.

How do you feel your music or creative style has grown since you first started writing/releasing music?

I feel that as I have matured so has my music. Just life itself and personal experiences has allowed me to express this through music.

Where or when does inspiration hit you most? (and then what does your creative process look like once it does?)

When I go through things in my personal life, music is literally the only way I can fully release my emotions.

What can people expect from your live shows? + are there any upcoming shows to take note of?

An intimate and personal experience.

Who are your top most played artists lately?

Adekunde Gold, Frank Ocean & Drake.

What are you most proud of so far in your career?

Playing my music around the world — Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, London, to name a few.

What’s up next for Jaz Karis? (shows, new music, etc.)

This year I am releasing my best music to date. I will have my biggest headline to date as well as (a) few other surprises too!
