 BEING FROM BAHIA, BRAZIL - HOW DO YOU THINK THE ENVIRONMENT HAS SHAPED YOUR WORK?

Sendo da Bahia, Brasil. Como você acha que o lugar influencia a sua arte?

I believe that in many ways. Bahia, more specifically in Salvador, affects me directly and indirectly. I live in a city that is extremely culturally rich and although I do not address this type of local and historical representation I feel that it has an impact on my way of thinking and building stories.

Living here brings some obstacles with regard to infrastructure and general resources that force me to draw not-so-traditional wheels in relation to building an image with quality and impact, although it seems bad, I see this as a motivator that forces a differential. Bahia also gives me some advantages, such as the ease of finding natural settings and environments that I would probably have difficulty accessing if I lived elsewhere.

BREAKDOWN YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS FOR US

Fale um pouco do seu processo criativo

I believe that the basis of my creative process was developed at the same time that I discovered photography as a form of expression. As a teenager I had a lot of things accumulated inside me and I needed to materialize this in some way, in photography I found the answer, I built authorial portraits that reflected my emotions and thus I discovered myself as a creator and artist. Today the process is still similar, I have a subjective feeling or idea and I materialize it in an image, I always try to think of the beginning, middle and end process and I think this generates an interesting narrative telling a story.

NARRATIVES ARE A PREDOMINANT FEATURE THROUGHOUT YOUR ART, HOW IMPORTANT IS STORYTELLING IN RELATION TO YOUR WORK?

Narrativas são predominantes na sua arte, o quão importante é contar uma história no seus trabalhos?

A lot, there is a basic line of reasoning for my images, in general, I think of my images as if they were “video frames”. I realize that this process of cinematographic thinking ends up giving direction to the construction of the narrative with beginning, middle, and end.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHER/CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT THE MOMENT? WHY? HOW DID THEY INFLUENCE YOU IN THIS EDITORIAL?

Quem é o seu fotógrafo/diretor criativo favorito no momento? Porquê? Como ele/ela te influenciou nesse editorial?

I can't choose a particular person as a favorite, I believe that my visual repertoire is multi-referential, I have several artist friends that I admire a lot and inspire me to create. But if I had to choose a favorite, the photographer duo MARVIN definitely has a special place for me, I know a little of their trajectory (one of them coming from the same place as me), and following their growth process made me broaden my vision than was possible as a photographer and creator.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED WHILE CREATING YOUR MOST RECENT WORK?

Quais os desafios que você se deparou enquanto criava seu mais recente trabalho? 


This was my first authorial work in a while so I had several challenges. Budget and infrastructure limitations were definitely the most impactful, to make up for all this I tried to assemble the best team I could, I got in touch with several incredible professionals who added a lot to the project but still faced difficulties, in addition to being a city in need resource support we are in a pandemic reality which makes everything even more complicated.

Some changes were necessary, we had meetings, the editorial was readjusted and adapted to a possible reality at the moment. Despite all the limitations I feel that we managed to develop a very good result, I wanted to take advantage of this space to thank my team, Eduardo Bastos, who shared creative direction with me, Gotham who was responsible for styling and beauty with assistance from Andressa Santalucia and Rebeca Castro, R91 and Angela Carballal with the set design and finally the models; Gustavo Gustavo and Oda Thaylor, they managed to deliver the concept very well.
